Ben Johnson is the man in high demand at the start of this low season. The bright young Lions offensive coordinator is projected as a prime candidate to snag one of the head coach vacancies around the league,
Funny things happen on the way to coaching glory. Johnson turned down everything to stay where he was in Detroit.
Johnson declined an in-person interview with the Carolina Panthers and withdrew his name from consideration for other jobs he has nominated, notably in Indianapolis and Houston.
Johnson explains his reasons in a great conversation with Team Twentyman of the Lions. From Twentyman on Huddle’s podcast, here’s what Johnson had to say about why he chose to stay in Detroit rather than pursue higher positions elsewhere.
“It started with this place and these people,” said Johnson.
“You know there’s so much going on here, so many good people, coaches, players. I love the offensive staff, everyone we have there. I love the cast. I love coming to work every day. Coach Campbell is amazing. So, in the end, talking to my family, it just made sense. Be reasonable, don’t spoil a good thing.
