Finding acceptance, forgiveness, and achieving your health goals during the postpartum phase.
I partnered with journalist and owner of the babysteps.xyz blog, Ali Wolf Boghaert to ask some questions about nutrition and health tips for new moms. She has some great advice… so check out how she tackles some of these common new mom concerns about health and wellness.
The Struggle of Pregnancy and Motherhood
I’ve always been passionate about health, nutrition and fitness. I love working out, eating healthy, and feeling my best. In my 20s and 30s, I felt control over my body and learned to love it. All of that went out the window the second I got pregnant! While I am happy and grateful to have had a healthy pregnancy, I struggle with symptoms and body changes. I find it hard to let go of control of my ever changing and growing body. While I celebrate the wonderful experience of growing life, I also worry I’ll never get my pre-baby body back.
Stay Healthy as a new mother
Staying healthy as a mother is not easy, but it is possible! I’ve put on over 40 pounds and I could lose it all. The first few weeks with a newborn are tough. I dedicated that time to learning to care for my daughter. My health is number two.
Once I got the hang of living with a baby, I learned to stay healthy by planning, cooking, and being more intuitive with my health. I made printable grocery lists and meal planners (link), which I still use weekly. I find that if I plan my groceries and meals, I stick to it and often avoid eating out. Eventually, I learned that the key to staying healthy as a new mom is taking it easy on yourself. If I need a break instead of working out, I do it.
How to make time for self-care
It’s easy to forget about self-care when caring for a baby. I believe it starts with your mindset. Simply think about what makes you happy, what makes you feel like YOU and go beyond that. The challenge is finding the time. Take some time for yourself every day, even if it’s just a ten-minute bath. start there. Have fun. If you can, wake up an hour earlier than your family or stay up late. Use that time for self-care.
I am an early bird. As a new mom, I went to bed at 9pm so I could wake up at 5am to work on my Etsy shop, do yoga, and enjoy a cup of coffee in peace. I know the schedule isn’t for everyone, but it’s been amazing for my mental health and clarity!
Stay positive and encouraged through your health journey
My biggest tip is to be easy on yourself. Celebrate your body and be grateful for the great things you’ve accomplished! Enjoy the cuddles of your newborn and give yourself time to heal. At first, you may not see dramatic weight loss, but trust the process. Start eating healthy sport when you are ready and soon you will start to see results. Consistency is key.
Connecting with other moms is a great way to stay positive. No one understands the postpartum recovery process more than someone who has lived through it too. put yourself out there! Try joining a moms group, a new moms fitness class, or a moms and me class. There are tremendous benefits to taking a 45-minute stroll in a stroller with other mothers.
In my first few weeks as a mother, I met a dear friend through the Peanut app. We went for walks in nature and even though our baby was crying and cranky it was wonderful to get out and connect.
My final tip is to ask for help. It really needs a village. It can be a challenge to meet your basic needs as a new mother. You can’t expect to do it all without leaning on your partner, family, or friends. If you don’t have anyone nearby to help, consider hiring a babysitter for a few hours.
